What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

So you've booked a session and now you're in a full blown panic searching in your closet for a Pinterest-Gram worthy photo sesh! I totally get it, and trust me I want you to feel like an insta model, too. I'm sharing all the tips here for you to get started building an amazing look for your engagement session.

Wear what makes you comfortable

This is my number one priority as a photographer! Not only do I want you to feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera, I want you to feel like you can move and enjoy your time being photographed. If that means jeans and a tee that's amazing, if you want to slay in a LBD and heels then embrace it. Wear what makes you feel your best.

Keep your location in mind

This is important. Where are you having photos? The beach? Downtown? Planning the vibe and look of a session all starts with a location and can be enhanced with outfits + accessories. Dress for the appropriate climate, season and environment. You wouldn't want to wear heels trecking through the woods, right?

Build a base with neutrals.

You'll want to build a base for your outfits, such as a solid color sweater and jeans or a natural colored dress. I tend to tell clients to avoid bright colored clothing as it doesn't always photograph well. Neutral colors can stand the test of time and will always look good in any environment. You'll want to coordinate with your partner but not match. Pick colors that work well together vs wearing the exact same colors. Also, try to avoid logos and crazy printed clothing.

Don't be afraid of accessories!

I suggest building a base outfit with solid colors and adding in accessories for you to show off your personality. We all know I am a sucker for hats and jean jackets. So get creative and show off your personal style. Feel free to bing props as well to add in personal touches to your gallery. A sign that says “save the date”, “we’re engaged” etc, bring a picnic with champagne, or even just a cozy blanket to cuddle up with!

Dresses, skirts + movement.

I won't lie, most of my photography evolves couples dancing, running or being carried around by their s/o. What can I say, I LOVE movement! I incorporate it in almost every session and encourage clients to dress accordingly. Wear something that flows and catches the wind, like s flows dress or skirt. It always makes for the most beautiful photographs. It also doesn't hurt to wear a casual outfit that you can move, jump and dance in comfortably.

The Basics:

Here's what you should know.

  • Wear neutrals.
  • Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.
  • Don't match but coordinate.
  • Add accessories (ie. hats, jackets + a blanket)
